DIRECT MAIL CAMPAIGN

Diego’s Journey

CLIENT: National Audubon Society
ROLE: Lead Designer
YEAR: 2024
SKILLS: Direct Mail Design, Nonprofit Fundraising, Information Design, Print Production, Donor Communication

OVERVIEW:
Designed an engaging self-mailer telling the story of Diego, a Swainson’s Hawk’s 6,000-mile migration, to drive donor engagement and support for Audubon’s bird conservation efforts.

The Challenge

The National Audubon Society needed a compelling direct mail piece that would:

Engagement Goals

  • Tell a complex conservation story in an accessible, engaging way
  • Educate donors about bird migration challenges and Audubon’s work
  • Drive donations for conservation programs
  • Stand out in donors’ mailboxes and inspire action

Design Constraints

  • Self-mailer format requiring careful layout planning for fold and mailing requirements
  • Multiple information hierarchy levels (story, data, calls-to-action, donation form)
  • Need to balance emotional storytelling with practical donation information
  • Print budget considerations for a nonprofit organization
  • USPS mailing specifications and postal requirements

My Approach

Visual Hierarchy

Structured the piece to unfold progressively:

  • Stunning hero image captures attention
  • “Diego’s Journey” headline draws readers into the story
  • Migration map provides visual context
  • Timeline format breaks down 6,000-mile journey into digestible segments
  • Conservation challenges presented alongside journey milestones
  • Clear donation form and response mechanism

Layout Strategy

Designed self-mailer format maximizing impact while meeting postal requirements. The exterior features compelling imagery to encourage opening, while the interior layout guides readers through the story naturally before presenting the donation ask.

The Solution

Exterior Panel

  • Striking photography of Swainson’s Hawk in flight that establishes immediate visual impact
  • Clean Audubon branding that maintains organizational recognition
  • Mailing panel meeting USPS specifications
  • QR code for digital engagement option

Interior Spread

  • Letter from Leadership: Personal message from Vice President establishing credibility and urgency
  • Visual Migration Map: Illustrates Diego’s journey from Idaho to Argentina with geographic context
  • Timeline Format: Month-by-month breakdown of migration stages with circular photo insets showing relevant habitats/challenges
  • Conservation Callouts: Highlights specific threats (habitat loss, wind farms, pesticides, climate change) with Audubon’s response
  • Statistics Integration: “6,000 miles,” “millions of birds” presented prominently for impact

Typography + Design Elements:

  • Audubon’s established brand typography maintains organizational recognition
  • Teal accent color that draws the eye to key information and CTAs
  • Generous white space that prevents information overwhelm
  • Photo circles that create visual rhythm through the timeline
  • Pull quotes emphasizing key conservation messages

The Impact

Multi-Layered Information Design

Successfully balanced multiple communication goals — storytelling, education, advocacy, and fundraising — within a single self-mailer format. Readers can engage at different levels: a quick scan of images and headlines, a deeper dive into the migration story, or a detailed reading of conservation challenges.

Production Efficiency

Self-mailer format reduced printing and mailing costs compared to envelope packages while maintaining a professional presentation. Design worked within nonprofit budget constraints while delivering high visual impact.

Clear Path to Action

A prominent donation form with multiple giving options and clear instructions makes it easy for inspired readers to contribute immediately. QR code provides a digital engagement option for tech-savvy donors.
